Paramedic Refresher Module VI: Medical Emergencies II

This is a 4 hour course which meets WVOEMS Approved Paramedic Refresher (NCCP Standards)
Required Objectives:
- Discuss the potential causes of behavioral emergencies
- Define normal, abnormal, overt, and covert behavior.
- Describe the assessment process for patients with psychiatric emergencies, including safety guidelines
- Discuss the general management of a patient with a psychiatric emergency
- Describe restraint methods, both chemical and physical forms and when to apply each
- Describe care for the psychotic patient
- State risk factors for suicide
- Describe drug resistant infections
- Compare epidemic to pandemic
- Describe the role of the EMS provider in disease reporting
- State the differences between sepsis and septic shock
- Identify common special needs patients seen in EMS
- Describe the relationship between the caregiver and the EMS provider in caring for the special needs patient.
- Describe patient assessment of a special needs patient
- Discuss abnormal presentations present during childbirth
- Describe nuchal cord presentation
- Recognize the need for and discuss the management of the principals of neonatal resuscitation
- Describe the routine care of the newborn not requiring resuscitation
- Discuss management of a patient with an abnormal presentation during delivery
