Paramedic Refresher Module 1: Airway, Ventilation, and Neurological Management

This is a 4 hour course which meets WVOEMS Approved Paramedic Refresher (NCCP Standards)
Required Objectives:
- Differentiate between adequate and inadequate breathing
- Differentiate between respiratory distress and failure
- Explain when to oxygenate and when to ventilate a patient
- Identify the use of automated transport ventilators when managing patients
- Demonstrate effective BVM ventilation at a proper rate and depth
- Discuss advantages and disadvantages of various advanced airway adjuncts
- Define altered mental status
- State common causes of altered mental status
- Define status epilepticus/seizures
- Explain complications associated with seizures

Paramedic Refresher Module II: Cardiovascular

Required Objectives:
- Identify the options for out-of-hospital stroke assessment tools
- Explain oxygen administration during a stroke emergency
- Discuss the importance of knowing a timeline of stroke events
- Identify patients needing rapid transport to the most appropriate stroke hospital
- Discuss the importance of starting the fibrinolytics check sheet
- Consider causes of pediatric cardiac arrests
- Demonstrate ALS management skills during a pediatric cardiac arrest for:
- Airway management
- Vascular access
- Pharmacology

Paramedic Refresher Module III: Cardiovascular

This is a 4.5 hour course which meets WVOEMS Approved Paramedic Refresher (NCCP Standards)
Required Objectives:
- Understand the function of Ventricular Assist Devices
- Describe assessment/management of patients with VAD’s
- Discuss pathophysiology of congestive heart failure
- Discuss s/s and treatment of congestive heart failure
- Discuss the assessment and management of coronary disease and angina
- List the s/s of acute MI
- Identify injury patterns on a 12-lead ECG
- Differentiate STEMI from STEMI imposters
- Explain the procedure for managing an acute MI including STEMI and non-STEMI presentations
- Understand the benefits of reperfusion techniques in patients with AMI or suspected AMI
- Demonstrate the current techniques of cardiac arrest management
- Discuss airway issues in cardiac arrest management
- Determine criteria for terminating cardiac arrest in the out-of-hospital setting
- Identify signs associated with Return of Spontaneous Circulation
- Describe how to effectively manage hemodynamic instability
- List possible causes of cardiac arrest
- Make appropriate treatment choices
- Make appropriate destination decision

Paramedic Refresher Module IV: Trauma

This is a 3.5 hour course which meets WVOEMS Approved Paramedic Refresher (NCCP Standards)
Required Objectives:
- Identify the triage criteria in the CDC’s Field Triage Decision Scheme
- State the four steps of the CDC’s Field Triage Decision Scheme
- Review local protocols
- Identify s/s of a patient with a traumatic brain injury
- Explain the use of ETCO2 as a guide for ventilating head injury patients
- Define primary and secondary spinal cord injury.
- Discuss various cord syndromes and their s/s
- Discuss s/s of neurogenic shock and spinal shock
- Describe how to investigate the chief complaint of a patient with a gastrointestinal disorder, including how to take the patient’s history.
- Discuss the management and treatment of various gastrointestinal disorders
- Identify and treat severe hemorrhage
- Differentiate among indications, effects, and contraindications for the use of:
- Tourniquets
- Junctional Tourniquets
- Hemostatic agents
- TXA
- Explain the concept of permissive hypotension
- Discuss the dangers of excessive fluid administration

- Describe care for the psychotic patient
- State risk factors for suicide
- Describe drug resistant infections
- Compare epidemic to pandemic
- Describe the role of the EMS provider in disease reporting
