Energy Technician Career Starter
with Curt Hippensteel

This course is designed to prepare students with basic skills for starting a career in the energy technology field. This Energy Technician "Career Starter" program is comprised of two (2) existing first-year courses from Northern’s Energy Technology AAS Degree program: 1) Safety Applications and 2) Production Technology.
Students (credit and non-credit) will earn an “Energy Technician Career Starter Certificate” from Northern to launch their career in the energy industry.
Additionally, students will have the opportunity to earn an industry-recognized credential: the PEC Safeland USA card. The PEC Basic Orientation / SafeLand USA safety awareness course replaces multiple Operator orientations and provides students a general overview of life and safety issues in the oil and gas industry. Students will also receive an overview of basic tools, equipment, production vessels, valves, fittings and pipefitting skills in respect to the energy industry.
PLEASE NOTE: Steel toe boots are REQUIRED for this course and are the responsibility of the student to have on the first day of class.

Manufacturing Career Starter - Weirton Campus

This course is designed to prepare students with basic skills for starting a career in the manufacturing field. The topics being presented are short overviews of each subject in order to provide those new to manufacturing with a basic knowledge to prepare them for an entry-level position in manufacturing. Topics will include OSHA 10 training, CPR/First Aid training, blueprint reading, precision measurement, electrical and motor controls, Lean Manufacturing overview and soft skills / career preparation.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a continuing education certificate of completion. Students who attend all required hours of OSHA 10 and CPR/First Aid will receive industry certifications in each of those.

OSHA 10 (General Industry) - Weirton Campus

This course is designed to introduce entry-level workers to basic awareness training on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of workplace hazards. The course also provides information regarding workers’ rights, employer responsibilities, and filing a complaint. Books and OSHA 10 card included in class fee.
Blueprint Reading - Wheeling Campus
with Howard Clark

This course is designed to prepare students for an introduction to reading and interpreting machine shop symbols, welding prints and working drawings used in trades and crafts. The course focuses on dimension, shape, fabrication and assembly. Students will learn to interpret A.W.S. welding symbols found on prints including bead width; bead length; contour abutment; bead material; and smoothness. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a continuing education certificate of completion.
