Phlebotomy Technician - Wheeling Campus

Students will complete learning modules, quizzes and tests in an online platform and in person class instruction will be used for answering questions and all required labwork. You will be asked to bring in acquaintenances for lab time during this class.
Program Length: 40 hours of instruction
This course prepares the student for the Phlebotomy Technician role in a healthcare setting. The student will be instructed on techniques & skills related to preparing and monitoring patients for relevant procedures, and gain an understanding of infection control measures. Students are required to successfully demonstrate adequate skills related to Phlebotomy techniques, including 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary draws which are required for the student to be eligible to take the NHA Phlebotomy Certification exam.
Additionally, program completers of EKG and Phlebotomy can receive college credit towards WVNCC’s Patient Care Technician Certificate – a one-year program.

AHA CPR and First Aid - New Martinsville Campus

This course is also eligible for college credit at WVNCC (HPE 110).
This course is designed to instruct non-medical personnel on how to recognize and treat a life-threatening emergency. Topics include cardiovascular emergencies, external and internal injuries, stroke, heart attack/cardiac arrest, and basic first aid.
Upon successful completion of the course, students receive an American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED First Aid card valid for 2 years.

MIG I (Gas Metal Arc Welding) - Wheeling Campus

This course may be eligible for college credit (WELD 202 Beginning MIG) upon successful completion.
This course introduces students to the safety, nomenclature, and set up procedures for gas and metal arc welding (MIG). Students will perform open Single-V-Groove welds on plate without backing. Students will learn how to weld in all four positions and prepare for a certification test at the end of this course.

Paramedic Anatomy and Physiology

Description:
This course provides a comprehensive study of the anatomy and physiology of the human body with an emphasis on health and medical issues, is designed for students preparing to enter WVNCC’s Paramedic Program. It will include an overview of basic chemical organization, cell structure and function, and tissues; followed by the study of structure and function of all body systems.
The class is an online class completed asynchronously. Books and online access are included in the cost of the class.

TIG I (GTAW) - Wheeling Campus

This course will cover TIG welding training on vertical open root techniques. Certification exam is available and included for the vertical open root, 3 position, and possible 6G pipe.

ServSafe Food Protection Manager Course - Wheeling Campus

Books and certification are are included in the fees.
Per the WV Health Dept. - "Certification requires at least one employee that has supervisory and management responsibility and the authority to direct and control food preparation and services shall be a certified food protection manager who has shown proficiency of required information through passing a test that is part of the accredited program."

AHA BLS Provider - New Martinsville Campus

This American Heart Association BLS Course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support. This course reflects the updated 2020 American Heart Association guidelines. It teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in both prehospital and in-facility environments, with a focus on High-Quality CPR and team dynamics. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive an American Heart Association BLS certification card which is valid for two years.

Introduction to Orton-Gillingham

West Virginia Northern Community College (WVNCC) will offer this introductory course designed to teach K-12, West Virginia instructors the knowledge and practice of the Orton-Gillingham (OG) Approach. The course will be offered in person on WVNCC’s Wheeling campus and virtually. The OGA Subscriber 10 hoursonline course is a pre-requisite and is included in this course fee.
By learning the Orton-Gillingham approach, educators will understand how to use and implement the O-G teaching techniques and procedures when working with a student(s) with a reading disability, such as dyslexia. This course will provide practical knowledge and support for learning how to apply the skills and techniques that will lead students to be successful readers.
Participants who successfully complete this training will be eligible to participate in the 100-hour practicum. Over a minimum of eight months, a 100-hour supervised practicum will be offered that includes 10 one-hour observations. Participants will meet 1:1 with the same student, receiving ten observations by a Fellow or by a Fellow-in-Training (FIT). Participants who successfully complete this training will be eligible to apply for certification at the Associate Level from the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA).
Who is eligible to participate?
This training is open to any K-12 teacher with a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in any area of study.
The training will be taught by Cyndi Schultz, Accredited Training Fellow of Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA), and co-taught by Theresa Kowcheck, Director of Literacy for Edge. Theresa is a Fellow-in-Training through the OGA and an instructor of Reading at Carlow University in Pittsburgh, PA.
